THE MATT SCHATZ TMI MUSICAL THEATER LYRIC WRITING WORKSHOP
In-Person in Los Angeles + Virtual Option
4 weeks • Real craft • Real feedback • Snacks included
Ever wanted to write a musical theater lyric? Or a whole song? Or a whole show? Whether you’re a playwright, songwriter, poet, or just someone who loves musicals and is curious how the lyrics get made, this is for you.
Over four weekly sessions, we’ll explore the fundamentals of theatrical lyric writing. From structure and rhyme to style and story. You’ll get direct, personalized feedback from me, Matt Schatz, award-winning writer and composer, Kleban Prize winner, New York Musical Festival Outstanding Lyrics Award recipient, ASCAP Harold Arlen Award winner, and BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop (Advanced) alum. I’m also an ASCAP Musical Theatre Workshop alum.
My plays and musicals have been produced at the Geffen Playhouse, City Theatre, Urbanite Theatre, South Carolina New Play Festival, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Great River Shakespeare Festival, The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, and the New York Musical Festival, among others.
Each week includes:
Craft talk and exercises (we’ll dig into what makes a great lyric tick)
Fun writing assignments you’ll actually want to do
Constructive peer feedback (don’t worry—it’s supportive, not scary)
Discussion of song types: “I Want” songs, “I Am” songs, almost-in-love songs, comedy songs, ballads, and more
Special guest speakers
Snacks (if you're in the room)
Laughs!
